About Me

I have used computers since the age of 8 when my mother bought me a BBC B Micro with a massive 32KB of RAM and a state-of-the-art floppy disk drive! I used this to learn BASIC, progressing to STOS BASIC on the Atari ST, then on to QBasic and Visual Basic on the PC.

I studied Computer Science at the University of York where I learned about the delights of Scheme, C, C++, Java and Haskell. Whilst at University I also did a year-long industrial placement at IBM where I worked on the build systems for MessageCenter for DirectTalk, learning Perl along the way.

After graduating I worked with assembly language on TPF mainframes, while also learning about more modern things including PHP, MySQL and Javascript which I have used to develop several websites. I am now learning about WordPress development whilst also working as an independent analyst on other projects.

Away from computers, I enjoy spending time with my family, cycling, reading, watching films and sport and playing video games (when time permits!) I listen to a variety of music and play the guitar, and attend music festivals whenever possible. I also enjoy a good pub quiz and have won them on several occasions!

Here’s a picture of me after completing the 2012 Southend Bikeathon for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. In all I’ve raised £343 so far by doing several charity rides, including the RideLondon-Surrey 100 in 2013 and Southend-London-Southend in 2014.
